Parks and Re-Creation is an amalgamation of my lockdown experience. While trying to be productive during lockdown, preserve my mental health, and keep working, I began to connect the dots and create this visual diary. I’ve wanted to learn more about birds for a long time but felt I never had the time before now. With the 2m social distancing rule and having anxiety about exercising outside, I thought I could combine the two. Running outside has been a method I regularly use to manage anxiety; concentrating on looking for birds in the park helped manage the anxiety of running outside during lockdown. Mentally logging the birds I had seen in the park, I would research and draw them once I got home. Once I became a little more at ease with being outside, I began to observe how others were using the park to cope during this difficult time.

To help make sense of the current situation, I am putting together a zine. I am combining the need to get outside and run for my daily exercise, mental health, learning about birds while running in the park, and how other people are using the park during Covid-19. I will be including observations, facts about birds, and information about the benefits of running on your mental health. I will be including nods to events that have happened over the last few months. This is a work in progress.
